Housed in the former 1899 Victorian firehouse of Reily Hose Company No. 10, the Pennsylvania National Fire Museum is a must-see in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. It features an extensive collection of artifacts and information that showcase the history of firefighting throughout the United States. Visitors can admire vintage fire trucks, fire apparatus, alarm systems, and more! Here are some of our favorite things to see inside the museum.
Attractions at the Pennsylvania National Fire Museum
The Buskey Apparatus Room
Upon entering the Buskey Room, visitors will see a large US flag on display. The flag is made entirely of used fire hose and was created by member Dan Rothermel. Also inside the Apparatus Room is a beautiful white MACK 750 GPM pumper, donated by the Defender Fire Co. #3 in Berwick, PA. It’s the newest addition to the motorized apparatus collection and joins Engine 16 and Ladder 2.
Gamewell Alarm Room
The Alarm Room includes the Dauphin County Fire Dispatch Console that was in service during the nuclear incident at Three Mile Island in 1979. Visitors can pull the box to transmit an alarm through the Gamewell Alarm System, dating from the late 1800’s through the 1980’s. You’ll also find electronic equipment used to transmit the tones for a fire alarm. Follow the alarms from a rattle to the tone dispatch of recent years.
This area of the museum is dedicated to Oliver E. Wagner Jr., a board member and treasurer of the PA National Fire Museum. A display showcases his service as a volunteer firefighter with Reily Hose Company #10, Riverside Fire Company #15, and Rescue Fire Company #37. There are also artifacts reflecting his dedicated service to the Museum as well as his 20 years of service with the Pennsylvania National Guard.
On your way out, be sure to stop by the museum’s extensive gift shop. Featured items include toys and collectibles, official Pennsylvania National Fire Museum apparel, and a nice selection of hardback and softback books. Don’t forget to pick up a souvenir!
