Let’s face it, there is nothing like Southern hospitality. For putting you at ease in gorgeous settings, a Southern bed & breakfast really does the trick, and this is why we decided to put together a very short list of some of our favorite destinations.
The Lodge on Lake Lure
Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains in the majestic Hickory Nut Gorge, one of most expansive canyons in the nation spanning 14 miles, you will find the Lodge on Lake Lure. This North Carolina bed & breakfast features breathtaking vistas, which is why many film companies have been drawn to the location, using Lake Lure as their backdrop.
Featuring seventeen rooms by the water, each one decorated in inimitable style, the inn allows guests the luxury of enjoying views of the lake or gardens, surrounded by mountains that invite you to enter another world. Luxuriate on sumptuous bedding, lounge in cozy bathrobes, write a missive at your own antique writing table in your room…these are just some of the ways you will enjoy your time at this top bed & breakfast destination. For those of you who want to bring your pet, all you have to do is reserve the Secret Garden or Barnwood room and with an extra fee for cleaning, he or she can be by your side. In addition to superlative surroundings, you will have an excellent dining opportunity at the Lodge’s Tree Tops Dining Room just inside the main entrance. Dine either indoors or out. The mountains rise up all around, creating the perfect setting for a great seasonal menu with locally produced food created by Chef Michael Vitelli and his culinary team. For breakfast you can experience a variety of homemade specialties that will prepare you for the day.
During the summer there are many activities on the lake. You can also take advantage of the sandy beach, the boardwalk, and the marina. Nearby Chimney Rock State Park is perfect for exploring, or go to Hendersonville for shopping. Flat Rock Playhouse, renowned for its top-notch plays, presents another opportunity, as does the local Bluegrass scene for a real Southern music experience. You are sure to enjoy a day visit to the famous Biltmore Estate in nearby Ashville. This Chateau built by George Washington Vanderbilt II in the late 1800’s is an extraordinary example of the “Gilded Age,” complete with impeccably landscaped French and English gardens. The Stonefort Inn Downtown on a very quiet street in Chattanooga, Tennessee you will discover the beautiful 1909 brick and limestone structure that is the Stonefort Inn. With its 15 uniquely appointed guestrooms, this bed and breakfast in Tennessee lets you bask in truly Southern amenities created to help you forget the rest of the world. The Inn is perfect for a romantic getaway or business trip, with an eclectic mix of furnishings and décor. Superb dining awaits you at the Appalachian bistro, TerraMae. And just a few steps away, the delights of Chattanooga await you with a plethora of activities to take advantage of, such as the IMAX 3D Theater, the Tennessee Aquarium, the Southern Belle and Walnut Street pedestrian bridge, shopping, fine dining, and so much more. Glen Gordon Manor In the town of Huntly, Virginia, overlooking Shenandoah National Park and encircled by the Blue Ridge Mountains, Glen Gordon Manor is surrounded by lush farms and enticing vineyards. Resting on 45 acres of beautifully tended lawns, gardens, and pastures, the bed & breakfast was a Wells Fargo stagecoach stop back in the day. In the 1920’s, the Gordon family took over to turn the building into a typical Southern hunting lodge. Today the Manor House features two luxurious guest rooms along with a grand entrance hall, oak-lined hunt room, dining room, country kitchen, wine cellar, screened in porch, and terraces. Two adjacent private cottages complete the setting, with the intimate Glencroft Cottage and the larger Gordon Mews House, so perfect for entertaining friends and family. The property also features a pool and of course, the stables. Bring your own horse if you like, or arrange for a trail ride with optional jumps, booking one of the Manor’s own horses. Order a picnic lunch to make your afternoon even more complete. You can also arrange for jumping or other types of riding lessons if the spirit moves you. The Inn on Campbell Don’t let overlooking a main street fool you. The Inn on Campbell is conveniently situated in the heart of Roanoke, Virginia, but you would never know it given the peaceful atmosphere that so reflects the Southern concept of ease and relaxation. With perfectly chosen décor, each guestroom has an en-suite bath, top-of-the-line feather bedding, and Oriental rugs. The Inn’s foyer boasts a 30-foot high skylight, pine floors, and wainscoting, lending an old world feeling to this delightful and charming bed & breakfast. Breakfast by candle light in the formal dining room filled with antiques, or have a cup of freshly brewed coffee in kitchen as you peruse the local papers. Then when evening comes around, enjoy some wine and cheese as you meet other travelers. Ask the concierge to book a romantic or business dinner in one of the excellent local restaurants, and then take a stroll to see what the nighttime brings. You can also take advantage of the many monthly specials that are offered, such as cooking classes with renowned chefs, wine tastings, Murder Mystery weekends, and concerts.
