As one of our favorite Canadian cities, Victoria stands out as the oldest. Founded in 1843 as a Hudson Bay Company trading post in honor of Britain’s Queen Victoria, it is also known as the “City of Gardens” for its opulent flowers and gorgeously landscaped local parks.

A Primary Port

Just on the Southern tip of Vancouver Island, Victoria expanded with the onset of the gold rush in 1858 and became the main port of entry to the colonies of both Vancouver Island and British Columbia, when British Columbia joined the Canadian Confederation in 1871. For most of the 19th Century, it was considered the largest city for trade and commerce, and when the Transcontinental railway was finally constructed, Victoria became the primary port.
